Understanding the Answer
The discount amount and final price are different results. The discount amount tells you how much money is removed from the original price, while the final price tells you how much remains after applying the discount.
For example, a 20% discount on $250 produces a $50 discount and a $200 final price.
Price values quoted in dollar and cents typically will be rounded to the nearest cent to yield a monetary result. Decimals may be included at intermediate steps prior to finalizing the calculation and rounding it to nearest cent.
Percentage Discount vs. Dollar Discount
A percentage based off a final price. When I get a $20 discount it’s always going to be a $20 discount, a 20% discount will vary with the price it’s associated with.
For example:
20% of $50 = $10
20% of $100 = $20
20% of $200 = $40
This is why the original price must be known before calculating a percentage discount.
Multiple Discounts Applied Sequentially
Two discounts applied one after another are generally not the same as adding the two percentages together.

How to Find the Discount Percentage
If you know the original price (i.e. the price without discount) and the amount saved, then you can find the percentage discount. This is given by29.
Discount Percentage = (Discount Amount ÷ Original Price) × 100
For example, if an item originally costs $200 and you save $30:
($30 ÷ $200) × 100 = 15%
The discount is therefore 15%.
How to Find the Original Price
If you know the discounted price and the discount percentage, you can work backward to find the original price.
Original Price = Sale Price ÷ (1 − Discount Rate)
For example, if an item costs $72 after a 20% discount:
