Calories burned per minute = (MET × 3.5 × body weight in kg) ÷ 200
Total calories can then be estimated as:
Total calories burned = [(MET × 3.5 × body weight in kg) ÷ 200] × duration in minutes
Where:
- MET = metabolic equivalent assigned to the walking intensity.
- 3.5 = the standard oxygen-consumption value in milliliters of oxygen per kilogram per minute used in the conventional MET calculation.
- Body weight in kg = your weight expressed in kilograms.

If your weight is entered in pounds, it can be converted to kilograms using:
Weight in kg = weight in lb × 0.453592

Walking Calorie Calculator Example
Consider a person who weighs 180 lb and walks for 30 minutes at an intensity represented by a MET value of 3.3.
First, convert pounds to kilograms:
180 × 0.453592 = 81.65 kg
Next, calculate calories per minute:
(3.3 × 3.5 × 81.65) ÷ 200 = approximately 4.72 calories per minute
For a 30-minute walk:
4.72 × 30 = approximately 142 calories
The estimated energy expenditure for this example is therefore about 142 calories. This should not be interpreted as an exact measurement. The example also depends on the selected 3.3 MET intensity; using a different walking speed, incline, or activity classification would change the result.
Understanding Your Result
Your result estimates the number of calories associated with the walking session described by your inputs. For example, a result of 200 calories means the calculation estimates approximately 200 kilocalories of energy expenditure during that activity.
The result is most useful for comparing walking sessions under similar conditions. For example, you can examine how estimated calorie expenditure changes when walking longer, increasing speed, changing body weight, or adding an incline.

Calories Burned by Time vs. Distance
