How the Sodium Intake Calculator Works
The Sodium Intake Calculator should be viewed as a guideline based planning tool rather than an accurate physiological sodium-requirement equation. The majority of the general sodium recommendations are derived from well established age-related dietary recommendations, with exercise, significant sweating, medical situations and individual variation influencing interpretation.
In the general United States population ages 14 years and older, the recommended upper limit for sodium intake is less than 2,300 mg/d. Even lower age-specific limits exist for younger children.

The Nutrition Facts label also uses 2,300 mg as the Daily Value for sodium for adults and children ages 4 years and older. A Daily Value is a nutrition-labeling reference and is not a personalized medical prescription.
A few health groups have also mentioned an intake goal of roughly 1,500 mg/day for many adults, especially in cardiovascular-health recommendations. This lesser amount should not necessarily be considered the ideal intake for everyone.
There is no standard mathematical equation for determining an individual's sodium needs. No scientific formula exists for the calculation of an exact sodium amount for each individual based on the variables of sex, activity level, height and weight. Any references to individual contributions should be considered information provided for the calculator, not a definitive physiologic necessity.
Sodium Intake Calculator Example
Suppose a 35-year-old adult enters their current measurements, chooses a typical activity level, reports average sweating, and does not have an individualized sodium target prescribed by a healthcare professional.
A general planning reference may use a daily sodium limit of 2,300 mg.
If this amount is divided evenly across three meals:
2,300 mg ÷ 3 = approximately 767 mg per meal
The approximate planning amount would therefore be 767 mg per meal. This does not mean each meal must contain exactly 767 mg. Sodium intake can vary between breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and beverages while the overall daily amount remains the more important reference.
If age, activity, sweat-related information, or another applicable selection changes the calculator result, interpret the number as an estimate based on those inputs rather than an exact measurement of physiological sodium requirements.
Understanding Your Result
Your main result represents an estimated daily sodium target or reference amount in milligrams. It is different from your actual sodium intake. For example, a result of 2,300 mg does not mean you have consumed 2,300 mg; it represents a daily planning reference.
For individuals 14 years and older, the general U.S. Upper limit for daily intake is 2,300 mg. In younger children there are lower age specific limits.
A lower goal such as 1500mg may sometimes be used as a more restrictive dietary target. But please do not assume this as the "appropriate" intake for everyone- every adult, athlete, and health condition.
Any calculator indicators (e.g., "optimal", "moderate", or "high") should be regarded as general nutrition inferences, not a diagnosis. A sodium calculation cannot be used as a predictor of cardiovascular health, renal health, hydration, or determine if blood sodium is normal.
Factors That Can Affect the Result

Additionally, the calculator was unable to accurately estimate athletic sodium replacement based on a single general sweat category. How to Compare Your Sodium Target With Food Labels
Daily sodium reference is given in milligrams on the calculator. Nutrition Facts on a food label indicate the amount of sodium in a typical serving. To see if the product is above or below your daily recommendation, first look at the serving size on the label. Then multiply the sodium quantity by the number of servings you are actually eating.
For instance, if the label of a packaged food lists 480 mg of sodium per serving and you eat two servings, the sodium you consumed from that food is:
480 mg × 2 = 960 mg of sodium
You can compare that amount with your calculator result to understand how much of your estimated daily sodium target the food represents.
Daily Sodium Target vs. Actual Sodium Intake

How to Calculate Sodium From Multiple Servings
Serving size is one of the most important details when estimating sodium intake from packaged foods. The sodium number on a Nutrition Facts label applies to the serving size shown on that label.
A simple calculation is:
Total sodium consumed = Sodium per serving × Number of servings consumed
If a product contains 350 mg of sodium per serving and you consume 2.5 servings:
350 mg × 2.5 = 875 mg of sodium

Sodium and Salt Are Different Measurements
