How the Simple Interest Calculator Works

Understanding Your Results
The simple interest result represents the total interest generated by the principal, annual rate, and time period entered. The total amount represents the original principal plus that calculated interest.

If interest is credited to the balance and future interest is calculated on that increased balance, a compound interest calculation is more appropriate.
Using Months or Days in a Simple Interest Calculation
The standard formula assumes the interest rate and time period use compatible units. When the rate is annual, time normally needs to be expressed in years.
For example, six months can be represented as:

Nine months can be represented as:
