How the Roofing Calculator Works
A roofing calculation generally starts with the horizontal projected area of the roof. For a simple rectangular section, this is length multiplied by width. Because pitched roofs have more surface area than their horizontal footprint, the projected area is multiplied by a slope factor.
The slope factor depends on the roof pitch. A low-slope roof has a factor closer to 1, while a steeper roof has a larger factor because the sloped surface is longer than its horizontal projection.

Horizontal Area = Length × Width
When roof pitch is expressed as a rise of P inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run:

Roof Area vs. Building Footprint
The footprint and the roof surface area are not necessarily equal. A building with a 1500 ft 2 horizontal footprint may have a pitched roof with significantly more surface area. A steeper roof pitch increases the length of the sloped roof, and an overhang pushes the roof beyond the walls.
Therefore, employing living space, floor space, or the square footage listed in property advertisements as a proxy for actual roof measurements may lead to an imprecise approximation.

Do not estimate pitch visually when accurate project quantities are important. Use reliable measurements, building plans, manufacturer-approved measuring methods, or information provided by a qualified roofing professional.
From Roof Square Footage to Material Planning
Once the quantity of roof surface area has been estimated, the size can be used for comparison between roofing products. When determining the coverage characteristics of the specific shingles, metal panels, membrane, underlayment, or other roofing product, convert the coverage from square feet to roofing squares (divide by 100).
Order material in full package quantities. If the calculated quantity is between package quantities then the actual purchased quantity may need to be rounded up as follows to package and installation constraints.
What the Roofing Calculator Does Not Include
A roof-area calculation will not include all the materials needed for a roof project. For the roofing system or building, there may also be underlayment, flashing, drip edge, ridge, ventilation, fasteners, waterproofing, and other accessories.
The calculator also does not take into account roof condition, structural capacity, damage to decking, code compliance, drainage, ventilation or the appropriateness of a specific roofing material. These should be considered on a case by case basis where relevant to the job.
