Use the actual elapsed time if you want an overall pace that includes stops. Use moving time if you want to evaluate only the time spent actively running, walking, or cycling. Do not combine moving time with a distance measurement that includes sections completed during excluded time.

Enter seconds whenever possible. Even a small time difference can affect the displayed pace, particularly over short distances. Confirm that the distance and pace units match before interpreting the result.

How the Pace Calculator Works

The calculator divides total elapsed time by total distance to determine the average amount of time required to cover one unit of distance. For example, dividing minutes by miles produces minutes per mile.

If time is the unknown value, the calculator multiplies pace by distance. If distance is unknown, it divides total time by pace. Unit conversions may also be applied so that a result entered in kilometers can be displayed per mile, or vice versa.

Pace and speed describe the same activity in different ways. Pace expresses time per unit of distance, while speed expresses distance per unit of time. A lower running pace, such as 8:00 per mile instead of 9:00 per mile, represents faster movement. A higher speed represents faster movement.

Pace Calculator Formula

The standard pace formula is:

Pace = Total Time ÷ Distance

Where:

  • Pace is the time required to cover one mile, kilometer, or another distance unit.
  • Total Time is the complete duration of the activity.
  • Distance is the total distance covered.

Average speed can be calculated as:

Average Speed = Distance ÷ Total Time

Time must be expressed consistently before performing the calculation. For example, 42 minutes and 30 seconds equals 42.5 minutes because 30 seconds is one-half of a minute.

Converting Between Pace Units

One mile is approximately 1.609 kilometers. To convert a minutes-per-kilometer pace to minutes per mile, multiply the pace by approximately 1.609. To convert minutes per mile to minutes per kilometer, divide by approximately 1.609.

Because pace is formatted as minutes and seconds rather than a decimal, convert the decimal portion of a minute into seconds by multiplying it by 60. For example, 7.5 minutes equals 7 minutes and 30 seconds, not 7 minutes and 50 seconds.

Pace Calculator Example

Suppose a runner completes 10 kilometers in 50 minutes.

Pace per kilometer = 50 minutes ÷ 10 kilometers = 5 minutes per kilometer

The runner’s average pace is therefore 5:00 per kilometer.

Ten kilometers is approximately 6.214 miles. The corresponding pace per mile is:

50 minutes ÷ 6.214 miles = approximately 8.047 minutes per mile

The decimal portion is converted to seconds:

0.047 × 60 = approximately 2.8 seconds

The equivalent pace is approximately 8:03 per mile. Average speed for the same activity is 12 kilometers per hour, or approximately 7.46 miles per hour.

Understanding Your Result

Your result represents the average pace across the entire entered distance and time. It does not show how consistently that pace was maintained. A runner could alternate between fast and slow segments and still produce the same average as someone moving at a steady pace.

Compare results only when the underlying conditions are reasonably similar. A pace recorded on a flat road may not be directly comparable with one recorded on a steep trail, treadmill, crowded route, or course with frequent stops.

A predicted finish time assumes that the entered pace can be sustained across the full distance. This assumption becomes less reliable when projecting a short-distance pace over a much longer event. Fatigue, fueling, hydration, weather, terrain, and pacing strategy can change actual performance.

  • Terrain: Hills, trails, sand, and uneven surfaces can produce a slower pace than level pavement.
  • Weather: Heat, humidity, wind, rain, and cold conditions can affect sustainable pace.

Limitations of the Pace Calculator

The Pace Calculator provides a mathematical average or projection. It cannot evaluate cardiovascular fitness, training status, running efficiency, injury risk, hydration, recovery, or whether a particular pace is medically appropriate.

The calculation generally assumes a constant pace. Actual movement usually includes acceleration, slowing, hills, turns, fatigue, and environmental changes. Estimated completion times may therefore differ from real results, especially when the target distance is substantially longer than the distance used to establish the pace.

GPS watches, phones, treadmills, and mapped routes may produce different distance measurements. The calculator cannot correct inaccurate source data or determine which device measurement is most reliable.
