What Is a Body Shape Calculator?
A body shape calculator takes your bust, waist and hip measurements and using those it tells you what your body shape is (e.g. Hourglass, pear, apple, rectangle, inverted triangle), rather than you guess based on appearance.
This is important because things like clothing fit and style suggestions, even some health advice are determined by where your fat is located. This device is for anyone who wants better fitting clothes, stylist, health buffs and people interested in what their overall shape is, and wants to know it for real rather than just "a guess".
Are Body Shape Calculators Used and Who for?
Body shape calculators help you achieve several practical benefits:
- Online shoppers - to choose clothing cuts and styles that flatter their proportions
- Personal stylists and fashion consultants - to give clients accurate, measurement-based advice
- Fitness enthusiasts - to track how strength training or fat loss changes their proportions over time
- Brides and event planners - to choose dresses or outfits suited to a specific body shape
- Health-conscious individuals - to understand fat distribution patterns linked to certain health considerations
For instance, if a user shops online for jeans, they could use their Body Type result to select the right jeans whether its high rise style with a pear shape with your jeans or choose a classic flare leg to pair with boots the right way without having the problem.
What Factors Contribute To Your Body Shape Result
Measurement Accuracy
Wearing a heavy garment or having your tape measure sit higher on your bust can skew your results by half an inch and will be able to give your any results of what range.
Genetics
The pattern in which your body stores fat, be it around the hips, in the middle or evenly throughout, is dictated by inherited factors from your ancestors.
Hormonal Changes
A change in body shape caused by shifts in your hormones and occurs through the phases of puberty, pregnancy and menopause.
Body Weight Changes
Such gain or loss of weight can result in fat starting or finishing to move out of a completely different body part which might re-categorize your silhouette.
Muscle Distribution
Targetting small areas through strength exercises with specific parts (like the shoulders) or by concentrating on glute exercises. This can alter your body's natural shape without the body gaining too much weight!
Age
Skin is also flexible. Pliability and distribution of the body fats are modifications occur with aging that can subtly change the body shape, despite staying relatively constant in weight over years.
Bone Structure
Natural differences with relation to how wide the shoulders, the size of a rib cage, or hip bone width create differing ratios irrespective of fat or muscle, more so with categories with rectangle or inverted triangle styles.
Pregnancy History
The upper (iliac) bones of the hip can become permanently separated as a result of pregnancy, and this is also a reason for alterations to fat storage patterns so body shape can alter following birth.

Detailed Calculator Guide
How to Measure Your Body Shape Correctly
Getting an accurate body shape result: Take 3 measurements that are recorded accurately. Use a flexible tape measure, wear tight clothing or measure on bare skin and stand naturally without pulling the tape measure too tight.
- Bust: Wrap the tape around the largest part of your bust and make sure it's level across the back
- Waist: Take a measurement at the narrowest part usually just above your belly button and don't suck in.
- Hips: Measure around the fullest part of your hips and buttocks. Ensure that the tape is parallel to the floor.
Add all three measurements up in the same units (inches or cms). It will hurt you to miss being moved into a better category by half an inch or so, but try measuring up two times and use the average.

Body Shape and Waist-to-Hip Ratio
It’s more than just the latest styles where we carry the body fat in body is also associated with health impacts .Researchers have measured their waste to hip ratio, by dividing ones waist size by the hip size which gives you a ratio .
But in women, a reading above 0.85 (and men, above 0.90) indicates that fat accumulation tends to focus on the abdomen - so-called apple shapes, as opposed to pear shapes where fat hangs around the hip area. Again, being a pear isn't necessarily all healthy, but body shape can contribute to doctors' assessments.
Why Your Body Shape May Change Over Time
It is normal for body shape to change with age. Normal reasons are:
- Hormonelle endringer i puberteten, under graviditet eller i overgangsalderen
- Significant weight gain or weight loss
- Strength training that builds muscle in specific areas
- Natural aging, which affects skin elasticity and fat distribution
- Childbirth, which can permanently widen hip bones
Re-measuring every couple of months, and especially after a significant lifestyle change, will do less harm and is probably more accurate than the results of a long outdated test.
