Most modern BMR calculators use the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which replaced the older Harris-Benedict formula because it's been shown to be more accurate for the average adult.

The formulas look like this:

  • Men: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age in years) + 5
  • Women: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age in years) − 161
